Nestled within the mountains, the Taikang hotel development began with an existing heritage wall as the starting point and inspiration. Strong brick walls, high parapets, and thick bands of concrete foundations inform the architectural design. Guests take a meandering path through the trees and approach the heritage wall, behind which stands the large glass volume of the hotel reception. The fully glazed side of the reception lobby reflects the heritage wall behind whilst looking out to the forest beyond, referencing the natural environment and the ever-changing seasons. This became a key design ethos for the rest of the design which focused on establishing key vistas and framing views of the changing scenery. A large plaza at the centre of the development lends itself to various activities during the year to bring family and friends together creating nostalgic moments inherently tied to the various seasons.
